The first Chilean miner returned to the surface late Tuesday

BREAKING NEWS — The first Chilean miner returned to the surface late Tuesday with a rescue worker after being trapped a half-mile underground for 69 days with 32 others.

Rescuer Manuel Gonzalez climbed out of the escape capsule in the underground chamber and was greeted with cheers by the miners, who chanted “Chi Chi Chi, Le Le Le!” and could be seen huddling around him as he began to give them instructions.

Gonzalez, a rescue expert with the state copper company Codelco, will be followed by Roberto Ros, a paramedic with the Chilean Navy’s special forces. Together they will prepare the 33 miners for their journey up the 2,041-foot shaft.

President Sebastian Pinera cheered as well and shared hugs with his ministers while they watched video of the capsule entering the miners’ chamber.

In the family camp outside the mine, relatives of Florencio Avalos, the miner chosen to come up first, cheered, sang and prayed.

Local Science Center & Museum mixed up in racial discrimination news story

A damaging mistake was made in the local news here in Atlanta yesterday evening (9/2/2010).

Fernbank Museum was incorrectly identified as the target of racial discrimination lawsuit, when in fact the subject of the story was Fernbank Science Center.  Fernbank Museum has been receiving calls and e-mails regarding the confusion and are actively trying to clear things up as Fernbank Museum is not the facility involved.

This is an unfortunate situation and will hopefully get resolved soon.  According to local Atlanta news station WSB-TV, Fernbank Science Center is being accused of racial discrimination against children.

I have not had time to research the situation in detail so please refer to linked materials for more information.

You can read WSB TV’s news story about the issue here.

News: Baby Buggy Bedtime Bash draws hundreds to family-friendly carnival to raise money for New York’s children in need

Can you imagine having to choose between paying your rent/mortgage or buying medicine or diapers for your child?

Baby Buggy®, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to delivering essential baby items to New York City families in need, held its 4th annual Baby Buggy Bedtime Bash, presented by Target®, Thursday, June 3rd at Victorian Gardens at Wollman Rink in Central Park.  The eagerly anticipated sold out event raised $384,000 and was attended by more than 1000 parents and children.

Jessica Seinfeld, Founder and President of the Board, attended the event with Baby Buggy’s Board members and Friends along with supporters Natalie Morales, Erica Hill, Jeff Gordon, Celerie Kemble, and Juju Chang all of whom attended with their children.  Also in attendance were many families from Baby Buggy partner site Harlem Children’s Zone, who attended as VIP Guests.

“New Yorkers never disappoint, and they always support fellow New Yorkers in need,” said Baby Buggy Founder Jessica Seinfeld. “Families need Baby Buggy now more than ever – our sites are reporting a 15% increase in need over this same time last year.  Many parents who already depend on Baby Buggy are now unemployed and forced to make difficult choices between things like paying rent, or buying medicine versus purchasing a crib or buying diapers.  Thanks to our generous corporate sponsors and supporters, the money raised at this event will mean fewer parents having to make painful choices in how they provide for their children.”

Target was the event’s lead sponsor. Additional sponsorship was provided by Aveeno Baby®, Nickelodeon, Delta Children’s Products, Natural Care by Danny Seo, Lansinoh, Rosie Pope Maternity, MeeGenius! and Skip Hop.  The family-friendly celebration, which included carnival rides and activities, also featured appearances by Clifford the Big Red Dog, Bob the Builder and Angelina Ballerina.

The Target tote gift bag contained up & up hand sanitizer, up & up baby sunscreen lotion, Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Lotion, Aveeno Baby Wash & Shampoo, Delta toddler hangers, Cleanwell, a HIT Entertainment DVD, a Sprout Coloring Book, a copy of Observer Playground, MeeGenius! Postcard, Lansinoh Clean & Condition Cloths, a free class at SoulCycle, a Citibabes guest pass, a bib from Rosie Pope Maternity and a Gruber Photographers coupon.

Whoopi Goldberg was a bricklayer.  That’s a tough job!

Russell Crowe was a waiter.  I’m sure he got some great tips from the ladies.

Gwen Stefani’s previous job was as a Dairy Queen cleaner.  Wacky huh?

Johnny Depp was a telemarketer!  What a bummer..wasting his good looks by sitting in a cubicle bugging people on the phone.

Pink was a McDonald’s worker.

Simon Cowell worked in the post room.

Madonna worked in a doughnut factory.  WHAT?

Colin Farrell was a dance teacher.  Not the suspected sexy kind of dancing.. line dancing!

Barack Obama was an ice cream seller.  How much more ‘all-American’ can you get?

Geri Halliwell, pre Spice Girls, was a Turkish game show hostess.  Huh, can you picture that?

Brad Pitt was a chicken dancer for a Mexican restaurant.  His job was to entice people to eat at the restaurant.  Couldn’t he have just stood there as himself, not a chicken?

Harrison Ford was a carpenter.  I can’t really vision that one.

Sean Connery was a coffin polisher.  I can vision that.

Annie Lennox was a waitress at a cafe in North London.
