Atlanta Moms: Fernbank NatureQuest – A Must Do!

We had such a great time at Fernbank Museum of Natural History’s new NatureQuest exhibit a couple of weeks ago.  We could have stayed for hours.  Even my 11 year old!  I expected my 4 year old to love it and want to stay but my 11 year old son explored every nook and cranny and could have stayed all night.

Fernbank NatureQuest is a different kind of museum experience–one where children are engaged through over 100 interactive encounters on a journey to explore an immersive, nature-inspired environment. It’s a space filled with live animals, hands-on learning and the thrill of following curiosity’s path. Everywhere you look, there is something to “do.” Games, interactives and live animals are just the beginning! Look, explore, engage, observe, discover, climb, play, learn!

  • The Clubhouse is home base for a variety of activities, including microscopes, books and activity cards.
  • Each ecosystem has a Forestry Sign. Check there to see what discoveries have been made today and then see if you can find them.

My son loved the waterfall and sciency areas while my daughter loved the ‘moving water’, book nook, and the canopy walk.
Fernbank NatureQuest hours are Monday-Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sunday Noon – 5pm

Enjoy your visit to Fernbank Museum of Natural History!

Atlanta Moms: Check Out Animalopolis IMAX at Fernbank Before it’s Gone March 17th

The kids and I saw Animalopolis a couple of months ago and enjoyed the singing lions, waltzing bears, and sea lions that turned somersaults.  Both of the kids cracked up at times and then I would see their jaws on the floor as they watched in amazement.  Animalopolis is an IMAX film great for the entire family but I recommend that you don’t take a child four and younger if he/she is sensitive to loud noises and big screens!

Showing through March 17, 2011*

You’ll give it two paws up!

Take a playful voyage into the magical world of animals in this giant screen adventure featuring rhyming narration and a classical music soundtrack. Whether going nose to nose with hippos as they graze upon nature’s massive salad bar, or eye to eye with dancing bears, Animalopolis blends fun vignettes with interesting animal facts.

Animalopolis takes a lighthearted and imaginary look at a variety of animals including cheetahs that race like a Ferrari, bears that run their own fishing school, an operatic lion, scary crabs that hold a town hostage and even attempt to cuddle with children, and much more.

Running at 32 minutes long, this film is a great opportunity to introduce younger children to the natural world and to the IMAX® experience.

Purchase tickets online or by calling 404.929.6400.

Local Science Center & Museum mixed up in racial discrimination news story

A damaging mistake was made in the local news here in Atlanta yesterday evening (9/2/2010).

Fernbank Museum was incorrectly identified as the target of racial discrimination lawsuit, when in fact the subject of the story was Fernbank Science Center.  Fernbank Museum has been receiving calls and e-mails regarding the confusion and are actively trying to clear things up as Fernbank Museum is not the facility involved.

This is an unfortunate situation and will hopefully get resolved soon.  According to local Atlanta news station WSB-TV, Fernbank Science Center is being accused of racial discrimination against children.

I have not had time to research the situation in detail so please refer to linked materials for more information.

You can read WSB TV’s news story about the issue here.
